Here is the aftermath of a Sabre Dance. I witnessed this Sabre Dance from the departure end of the runway. A 5,000-hour Lt. Col. Apparently rotated 10 knots slow. Scared the heck out of us. How does a guy with that much experience screw up so badly? Comment by Duane Clawson: Picture 509 is a/c 56-3918. She crashed on take-off on May 15, 1970 at Luke. This date came to be known as "Black Friday". About an hour after this accident, a/c # 56-3781 was #3 in a 3-ship returning from a student syllabus range ride. She was observed to be a little close on downwind and subsequently slow in the base turn. Mobile control told the student to add power, but did not observe any smoke indicating power. The engine flamed out and the student attempted to eject, but was well outside of the envelope. The student was one class ahead of me at Luke. A 1/16 inch piece of safety wire was found in the fuel control in such a position that it could have caused a flameout if the throttle was rapidly moved from idle to military power.
