Comments by Pete Felts: 56-3951 was at Homestead AFB from 1962 through 1966 that I know of. I crewed 56-3955 from 1958 through 1965. All the F guys knew each other and our airplanes -- it seemed that, if you crewed an F model, you were superior the a regular F-100 crew chief. We assumed that you had to have double the knowledge. (More important: if you were a good friend of a crew chief on an F, he might be able to get you a ride.) The Fs were more trouble than the D, but -- and I don't care what the experts say -- it was a good airplane. If you lost one, usually it was because the pilot did not know the airplane, we didn't lose too many experienced pilots due to peace-time accidents. Most of the losses were from young inexperienced pilots trying to make it do something that it was never designed to do. A good example was flat spins. In a flat spin, you do about three things to this airplane. First, deploy the drag chute to try and get the nose up and load the wings. Second, blow the tanks, trying to change the attitude of the airplane. Third, if extending the flaps and speed brake won’t work, it's falling flat with no forward motion to speak of, so there is no wing loading. In that case, eject, because it ain't going to get any better. I think I spent too many years on Crash Recovery, Aero Repair and Accident Investigation. My views are probably tainted.
