Kathy Jones standing next to an F-100D gate guard at Lackland Air Force Base (149th Texas Air National Guard) on 15 June 2001. Note by Peter Rob: The serial number on the tail of this restored F-100D is actually incorrect. The correct serial number is 56-3000 and that number would have been shown on the tail as 63000. (The first digit of the 56-3000 serial number indicates the decade of the year of production -- 1956 -- and the decade is typically not shown.) The correction was made sometime after this photo was taken. Note by "Brushface": The aircraft is 56-3000, which we called Triple Nuts. This F-100D was the personal aircraft of the Wing Commander (Col. Raymond Toliver) at 20 TFW, Wethersfield, UK. A look-a-like was painted and put on display at Wethersfield. However, that one was a French F100D, 54-2265, that was scheduled for scrap at RAF Sculthorpe, but was saved for display. This former French aircraft was at Wethersfield as 56-3000 for a number of years before it was moved to Soesterberg, Netherlands, and repainted once again. The original 56-3000 in the photo was last flown by the 182 TFS TX ANG and is displayed at the Kelly ANG Base, TX. Note: The burner can installed on this aircraft is an F-102 burner can. The ANG started installing F-102 afterburners in late 1973 or 74 after a TSGT in the ANG got a huge award for his suggestion. The original F-100 afterburner eyelids, known as Turkey Feathers, were worn out along with the J-57 engines and did create a lot of problems if not taken care of.
